A Tranquil Escape to Zamami Island: Staying at Minshuku Yadokari

Nestled in the crystal-clear waters of the Kerama Islands, Zamami Island is a hidden gem in Okinawa, Japan. Known for its pristine beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and laid-back atmosphere, Zamami offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. Our stay at Minshuku Yadokari, a charming guesthouse run by warm and welcoming hosts, made the experience even more unforgettable.

Getting to Zamami Island

Reaching Zamami Island is part of the adventure. From Naha, the capital of Okinawa, you can take a ferry from Tomari Port. The high-speed Queen Zamami ferry takes about 50 minutes, while the larger Zamami Ferry takes around 90 minutes. The scenic ride across the turquoise waters of the East China Sea sets the tone for the relaxing days ahead.

Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed at Minshuku Yadokari, a traditional Japanese guesthouse known for its cozy, family-run atmosphere. Located just a short walk from the port and surrounded by lush greenery, the guesthouse offers a quiet retreat with a homely touch.

Exploring Zamami Island

Day 1: Snorkeling and Beach Relaxation

After settling in, we made our way to Furuzamami Beach, just a 10-minute walk from Minshuku Yadokari. Known for its soft white sand and crystal-clear water, it’s perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The coral reefs just offshore are teeming with colorful fish, and we even spotted a few sea turtles gliding gracefully through the water.

Day 2: Exploring by Scooter and Sunset Views

On our second day, we rented scooters — one of the best ways to explore the island at your own pace. The roads are quiet and easy to navigate, offering scenic routes through lush hills and along coastal cliffs. We made stops at hidden beaches and peaceful lookouts, including Takatsuki-Yama Observatory, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the turquoise waters and neighboring islands.

In the evening, we headed to Ama Beach for sunset. This is one of the best spots on the island to see turtles coming ashore, and the golden hues of the setting sun over the ocean made for an unforgettable scene.

Day 3: Kayaking and Village Stroll

On our final day, we booked a guided kayaking tour around the island’s coastline. Paddling through the calm waters, we discovered hidden coves and remote beaches. Afterward, we explored Zamami Village, with its small cafes, souvenir shops, and friendly locals. A stop at a local izakaya for fresh sashimi and Orion beer was the perfect way to end the day.

What Makes Zamami Special

  • Kerama Blue Waters – The stunning shades of blue in the surrounding ocean are unique to the Kerama Islands.

  • Sea Turtles – The island is a protected habitat for sea turtles, and encounters are almost guaranteed when snorkeling or swimming.

  • Relaxed Vibe – Unlike the more tourist-heavy Okinawan islands, Zamami retains a peaceful and authentic atmosphere.

  • Easy Exploration – Renting a scooter allows you to explore the island’s hidden gems at your own pace, from secluded beaches to hilltop views.

Live the Zamami life

Our stay at Minshuku Yadokari made our Zamami Island experience even more special. The combination of traditional Japanese hospitality, breathtaking natural beauty, and rich marine life created a perfect balance of adventure and relaxation.
